Case Study: Children’s Day Nursery and Pre-School in High Wycombe

Early Years Foundation playground case study

Project work:

  • Installation of soft surface
  • Custom play roadway
  • Artificial grass
  • Landscaping

Indicative Budget: £16,000

We were approached by this Day Nursery to convert their rear car park into a colourful, playful environment where children were safe to run around and explore in a safe and secure space. As the children ranged in age from 3 months to 5 years, the space had to be accessible to all ages.

For soft, impact absorbing surfacing we went with 90m2 of black wet pour with a colour fleck running through it. As the previous surface was concrete we didn’t need to carry out any groundworks.

The surfacing itself is a layer of binder and SBR and then a top layer of EPDM rubber (recycled vehicle tyres). The depth of wet pour on this project was 40mm to comply with the critical fall height of the slide.

Adding fun with a custom roadway

We retro filled the surfacing with a roadway, traffic lights and road markings. We can easily customise our roadways to incorporate parking bays and level crossings.

The area of artificial grass was 96m2 which incorporated a 9m caterpillar. We installed this onto a base layer of wet pour to soften the ground.

On this project we also cleared the bushes, added trellis to the top of the wall, installed a 16.5m fence and added a raised planting area to the side of the play area and filled it with compost ready for planting.

Total cost for this project was £16,000 inclusive of VAT. 50% of payment was required before the work commenced, balance upon completion. All the debris and old surfacing was removed and disposed of and the site left clean and tidy.
